Political Law Associate Attorney
Job Description
Nielsen Merksamer Parrinello Gross & Leoni LLP has an opening for a political law associate attorney with 0 to 4 years of experience to work in its San Francisco Bay Area office (San Rafael).
Nielsen Merksamer is one of the preeminent political law, government law, and lobbying firms in the country. Our political law attorneys have extensive client contact and assist in advising the regulated community of corporations, individuals, nonprofits, trade associations, political and independent expenditure committees, and other public and private sector clients regarding campaign finance, lobby disclosure, and government ethics laws, including:
1. Conducting legal research and providing guidance on a wide variety of federal, state, and local campaign finance, lobbying, and ethics laws.
2. Counseling on the formation and maintenance of ballot measure and independent expenditure committees.
3. Overseeing the preparation of campaign finance and lobbying reports.
4. Developing and delivering presentations on political law compliance issues in client trainings, seminars, and conferences.
5. Advising on nonprofit compliance and governance issues.
Candidates must possess strong academic credentials (top 20%) and excellent research and writing skills. Experience with government, political, regulatory, or similar work experience is a plus, although not mandatory. The firm has a team-oriented culture, and there may be opportunities for a flexible, hybrid work schedule.
Salary & Benefits
Nielsen Merksamer offers a competitive salary. The annual salary range for this position, firm-wide, is $160,000 to $200,000+, based on factors including but not limited to: local market data, the applicant’s skills, prior relevant experience, longevity, and pertinent degrees, licensing, and certifications. The salary range does not guarantee, obligate, nor set expectations for the applicant’s wage in the event of hire.

Executive Assistant
Nielsen Merksamer, a nationally respected political and government law firm, seeks a dynamic, organized, and collaborative Executive Assistant to support assigned attorneys in its San Rafael (San Francisco Bay Area) office.
The Executive Assistant will support attorneys with administrative tasks, office operations, scheduling, and client communications. The position requires daily presence in the office and collaboration with other administrative assistants.
Key Responsibilities:
- Administrative Support: Assist senior partners, attorneys, and other professionals in the firm’s political law compliance section with project management, calendaring, travel arrangements, client relations, firm marketing, and expense reports.
- Office Operations: Manage general office support tasks, including phone management, inter-team communication, and file/document management. Primarily office-based to support the hybrid schedules of other team members.
- Collaboration: Learn the functions of administrative colleagues and serve as a back-up, facilitating collaboration across the firm’s offices.
- Technology Proficiency: Quickly learn new software programs and effectively use existing internal systems.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Two or more years of related experience.
- Communication Skills: Highly polished communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with all levels of management, staff, clients, and vendors.
- Technical Skills: High proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook (including calendar management), PowerPoint, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and Document Management Systems. Willingness to stay updated on software frequently used by the firm. Experience with NetDocuments or similar document management system is preferred.
- Organizational Skills: Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple high-priority tasks simultaneously with careful attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
- Pressure Management: Ability to work quickly under pressure to meet deadlines in a fast-paced, high-profile practice.
- Integrity and Discretion: High integrity, judgment, and professionalism, with the ability to manage and protect confidential information and financial transactions with the utmost discretion.
- Proactive Mindset: Ability to anticipate attorney/partner needs and follow up proactively.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with a law office environment, government, or campaigns.
Work Schedule:
- Eight-hour workday in office daily with flexible start/end times.
